The Battleford Skating Club offers the following Skate Canada Programs:
General Information of Recreational Programs
- Skaters may participate in any of the programs outlined or move up to a higher level.
- Moving from one level to another is generally done early in the season or after Christmas.
- You must consult with the coach and executive to make sure you are getting all financial and time commitment information needed to make the best decision for your child to progress.

Badges your child receives in the CanSkate program.
- Structured in a grid format
- Skaters may progress vertically as well as horizontally
Vertical Progression:
6 stages of learning Badges + a Stage 7 Optional Challenge
Horizontal Progression:
5 Fundamental Movement Badges + an Optional Challenge Skill
Skaters who achieve the Stage 4 Badge and the Go Forward, Go Backward, Stop and Turn badges may have the opportunity to move up to Primary.
Skating Sessions Consist of:
Program Assistants
- Program Assistants are the Senior skaters of the club
- They are trained by the head coach as well as travel to trainig sites to learn about coaching.
- Program Assistants participate in all aspects of a CanSkate Session.
- These skaters are not required to answer any skating question regarding your child's progress. You may, however, ask them to get the attention of the head coach or relay a message.
CanSkate
1 hour sessions twice a week
- Preschool age and 1st time skaters - Crawlers, Walkers, Shufflers
- All Skaters who can skate at least the width of the ice and can manage on their own for most of the one hoursession.
Focus:
- Standing and skating the width, length and perimeter of rink with confidence
- Eliminating the fear of falling
- Forward and Backward, Turning, Stopping
- Practice Right and Left, counting pushes, playing games
- Circuits and progressions
- Fast, efficient forward and backward skating
- A variety of different pushing techniques, stopping, turning techniques
- Some Figure skating skills that will give skaters an idea of what to expect
- For skaters interested in Hockey all skills will be modified to suit the sport
Badges you can expect to achieve depending on age, strength,agility, attendance
Participation Certificate Recognition Awards
Approximately 2 to 3 per year.

Primary Star Skate
- 1 hour session twice a week
- Skaters will finish the remainder of the CanSkate Badges
- Begin working on the Primary badges
- Skate Canada Test Program
- Option to participate in Group, Semi Group, Shared and Private Lessons
- 1 hour free on Senior Ice, lessons not included unless prearranged with coach

Senior Star Skate
- Finish the Primary Badges
- Working on the Skate Canada Test Program
- Have the choice of skating for up to 8 hours a week
(it is each family's choice how much you wish to skate)
- Participate in Group, Semi Group, Shared and Private Lessons - contact coach for specifics
- Ice fees do not include lessons
- Lesson fees are paid individually and separate from Ice Fees
(it is each family's choice how many lessons you wish to skate)
Focus
- Personal goal development
- Participation is mainly based on each individual family/skater
Personal goals, time commitments, financial commitments are arranged between you and your coach.
StarSkate Regional and Provincial Competitions
- These competitions are skated within our region or province as well as Nationally.
- Skaters compete at the test level they are skating at.

Competitive Skate
- Skaters participate at a Provincial Level and may move on to National and International Levels as well as the Canada Winter Games.
- Special tests must be taken in order to compete at this level.

- Powerskating is geared to hockey and ringette players we will improve skaters endurance, balance, power, agility, speed by focusing on proper skating and pushing technique through drills and on ice skating exercises.
- Theater of Ice is a program that encourages skaters to develop a relationship and understanding of movement patterns through the use of music, themes, beats and rhythms. Skaters will become aware of their personal space and creativity and learn to use basic skating skills to develop a personal stle explore what choreography really is which will increase confidence in their own performance skills.

Synchronized Skating or "synchro" involves a team of skaters performing various formations and maneuvers such as circles, blocks, lines, wheels and intersections. The team learns to skate in unison to music, while demonstrating quality edges, power and flow.
